Julianna Barwick

Julianna Barwick's experiemental loop-based compositions make for a very otherworldly sound, sort of like sonic weaving.

Max Raabe & The Palast Orchester

Oh what will I wear!? Surely a 1920s dress will be in order to go see this Weimar era 12-piece orchestra performing a mix of cabaret, ragtime, chanson, and early jazz, all done in the high style of the 1920s and 30s. As I gather, the audience usually "dresses the part" to go see Max Raabe & The Palast Orchester, which really sealed the deal for me. I've yet to see cabaret style singing in person and now I'm going to be able to see one while wearing some fabulous 1920s garb! If live nearby you might want to check it out.

The University of Michigan Musical Society is giving away tickets to the show as a special offer for their Facebook fans. Share or Like THIS POST on Facebook to enter to win.

karen dalton

As much music that I seek out and listen to it surprised me to discover someone like Karen Dalton until just recently. She was part of the Greenwich Villiage Folk music scene in the 1960s and Bob Dylan remarked the first time he saw her that "she had a voice like Billie Holiday and played guitar like Jimmy Reed... ".  You can read more about her here.  Take a listen to 'Something on Your Mind", which was covered by The Black Keys

forgivenes rock record

One of my very most all-time favorites bands, Broken Social Scene has a new album and last night as I lay there listening to it I was sure it was all the music I needed to hear for a long while. I think I felt that way about their first album too. That's kind of like saying I like one of my vintage dresses above all the rest so it's obviously exaggerated, but that's just how I felt in the moment. Have a listen and see for yourself, particularly to the track, "Sweetest Kill"...

witchfairyprincesswomangirl

Last night we sat around with my mother listening to records and enjoying the fire. Though my mom was and is way into music she somehow had never heard of Kate Bush. We listened to The Hounds of Love and basically she's my mom's new favorite person. If you have not listened to the album, I suggest you check it out, thought it was made in 1985 it has an "out of time" feel to it. It's insanely creative and at times even "out there", but it's one of those albums that is great to listen to while doing nothing else.

Kate Bush herself is just too terribly cute, like a fairy-princess-witch-woman-girl all rolled into one. And I just love the whole 80s look...

Media play

This past Monday I was at the taping for Late Night with David Letterman, and while I am not a huge Letterman fan (my husband Chad is) it was very cool to see how a television show like a talk show went on. I wasn't into the guests either (Keifer Sutherland - snore), and I didn't know who the band was. I wanted the guest to be someone like, Steve Carrell or Tina Fey, or even someone weird like when Joaquin Phoenox was on. But nonetheless it was luck of the draw and luck we even got to go! The band was Bat for Lashes and um, I LOVED them, or her, or whatever. It was great 80s electro throwback and she was cute as hell, the singer that is. I also loved the drummer, who was also a girl, she played the timpani with her kit and sang as well. I think aside from seeing the whole production of the show, the best parts were Bat for Lashes and also the Letterman Band led by Paul Shaffer - they are super tight and so seasoned, it's great to see them live.

Out of sorts

Day three now of feeling just "off", not sure why, just "off". I was hoping since today was a normal Monday I'd feel more normal, but no. I feel like I need to hit my reset button or something, and I think in my world that's called "do yoga" so after work today that's just what I'll do. I anticipate more time this week as I have banned myself from thrift shopping since I have so much stuff (does that EVER work!?), and will be able to head to both yoga and Pure Barre this week, and hopefully make a big soup, last one of the year as I think we are also under the last of winter.

My outfit is less than stellar, reflecting my sour and all around weird moody feeling. But I won't apologize for the outfit, if I start doing that I'd be apologizing a lot thereby rendering my apologies a bunch of hot air! And yes, my hair is always looking the same and that is because I sort of hate it and am growing it out so it lives in the little nubby bun for weeks on end!
Sweater - love this teal, nubby, drapy sweater that I thrifted
Necklace - I have a small collection of god heart necklace, I have always loved them, even my cat The Soph has one!
Jeans - JCrew, and love them to death, they make a boring outfit totally unboring!
Boots - thrifted, and waited such a long time to find them!
Belt - thrifted, and with the yellow jeans makes a pink grapefruit sort of effect that I love!

Music on my way to work (was as odd as I feel):
Daniel Wang
Loose Fur
Greg Brown
Joni Mitchell
Alexander Scriaben

And um, the new Andrew Bird album is soooooo wonderful!
He's not only a total babe, but makes the most sensitive, creative, delicate and
musical songs that I can listen to just about any time.
