scrimshaw

Quite honestly, I do not need another thing to obsess over, collect and search for. But alas, I have found something. Scrimshaw. The interest was sparked last week at dinner when my friend Duff was wearing the above pendant. I nearly leapt from my seat and attacked the poor gal's neck. Thankfully, for me, she's the shop owner of Jean Jean Vintage (a longer post on her shop is in the works) and the necklace was available in her shop and thusly became my own! It came in the most sweet packaging too, what a great little present!

Below are more examples of scrimshaw I found on Etsy and elsewhere on the web.

I love scrimshaw too! It's one of my husband's many hobbies! He told me that scrimshaw means "to waste time". The sailors used to scrimshaw on whale bones and teeth just to occupy themselves and it turned into quite an art! The pendants are gorgeous! Maybe I'll see if the hubby can make one for me! :)
