Clothes my friends hate.

Over a year and a half ago I found this romper while thrifting and instantly loved it. Though it was winter, and though rompers were yet to be in style again, I snapped it up quick and was so pleased, I could not wait summer so I could wear it. Summer came (last summer), I wore it and well, my friends were not fans, they scrunched up their faces and were highly skeptical, their faces seemed to say, "ahhh Lauren, sometimes your clothes just go places that we'd rather not follow." Dear Golden husband wasn't even as tackful, I believe he called it "hideous". And while I loved it, I only wore it on super hot days around the house. It also founds its way to my bag of clothes to giveaway, more than once, whereupon I reclaimed it over and over again, there's just something I love about it! So this summer is this fantastic romper's very first journey into the real world, I am wearing it out of the house, at work no less! And well, I maintain that's it's a supersweet and I love it to bits! My friend Jason said "without the belt & the shoes you look like an extra from Mamma's Family"...I think he's right!

cotton floral romper - thrifted
belt - thrifted
strappy platform shoes - thrifted
cutout earrings - thrifted

And on another note, I live in a relatively small town. I know most of the owners of the cafes, restaurants and shops I frequent. And I love that. I have a small post office and I know all the people who work there. Today a case was made for living in a small town. I got to the post office before work and their computers were down, or as Donna kept saying "we're in degraded mode", which I thought was mildly funny. Anyway, Donna knew I had to go to work and ship this huge bin of packages, so she just took all my stuff and my credit card and will deal with it later today when the computers are working, Tomorrow I will pick up my credit card - that is how much I trust this lady. THEN, I walk a 1/2 block to a cafe owned by Peter and he's out of lids for his cups. Well, I must have a lid or my coffee will be all over my car as I drive to work, so Peter, just washed his personal thermal cup and gave me my Americano in it. I love this kind of stuff...we always talk about how the world is too big and impersonal these days, but really, it's not, you just have to settle down and grow roots in a place. Once you do that, you can develop really nice relationships in your community which foster a sense of happiness that I can liken to nothing else.

Ahh... this is what I love about living in a small community. And good job to you too, because I think if you are friendly you can get to know people anywhere. Some people can live in one place for years and still never know anyone. I blab wherever I go - and I meet great people!

Ha ha, I like the romper!! I'm too shy to wear them, but if I had one with a print that good I'd probably wear it outside too.

this is exactly how i feel in downtown plymouth. when i tell people i live here, the kind of look at me like "i can't believe you live in that snotty/rich/whatever town". but really, most of the people here are average, moneywise. and, with such a thriving downtown, i can go in almost any shop here and know someone working there. i don't know my post office people, but i know the bakery owners well enough to be able to knock on their door at 7am, two hours before they're open, and get a loaf of bread.

roots are really what it's all about.

So, I did scrunch up my nose last summer. And like Jason, I'd do it again if you didn't have the shoes and belt with it. BUT those items make it cute- PLUS you could wear a potato sack and put a belt on it and look adorable, so it goes without saying.
I love the community aspect to this small town too. The other day I walked into the same coffee shop and said, "Peter, I don't know what I want" and he knows me so well, so he said "You want an iced soy chai latte" and dammit, he was right!

First of all, *fabulous* romper! You are right to not have gotten rid of it. There's something so special about it, and all of its colors.

And your town sounds marvelous. I'm still setting up roots in mine, after two years living here, and I love knowing many of the faces I pass each day. Such joy in that.

this was a great thought that reminds me how crucial community is to a sense of peace and contentment...but also that no matter where you are, community is where you find it!

HA! So glad you stuck to your guns! I wear some pretty crazy stuff. Other teachers make fun of it and then the students love it HA!.

You need plenty of room in your suitcase, so I think it best that you leave the romper at home next week.

Much love,
Your Dear Friend Who Hates It

So true! I live in a big town, but make a point to talk to almost everyone I run across (my kids laugh because I always talk to everyone, even people at the grocery store, yes, complete strangers, like, which chips are your favorite? or have you tried this tea before?). I know everyone at the post office by name and which days they work and whether they're married, have kids, and where they are vacationing. I always talk to the people who work at Starbucks, Pink Berry, Trader Joes, etc. You can make even a big town feel like a small one, by just extending yourself a little and offering up a smile.

I am sure your town is a much better place just because YOU live there, Lauren!

i think its cute. you pull it off because your body fits it perfectly. on another shape, it could quickly turn into bad news.

What a lovely post about your hometown. It made me feel good about my own small town just reading about yours. We sometimes overlook the small nuances of life that are right outside our back door. Thanks for sharing and thanks for givng me a moment to appreciate my own hometown.

I love the romper! Especially with the belt. Are the earrings for sale? I've fallen a little bit in love with them :)

You were completely right about the romper, I absolutely love the peachy tones in it. And sometimes when my friends or family dislike an outfit I'm in it just increases my conviction that I have some sort of sixth sense when it comes to dressing :P
