sweet & salty

I just love jewelry that looks beautiful but has a subtle "tough" quality. The Victorians were great at melding the tough with the demure and brought the snake ring into fashion. If you ask me it hasn't gotten old...though it is old, in a good way though! Today I was at an Anastacia's Antiques today in Philadelphia and there was a very nice collection of Victorian jewelry, I could have stayed in there for hours. But it reminded me that I wanted to do this post on St. Kilda jewelry. At first glance of some of the pieces you could miss the "tough" element, specifically those first two. I want that black and brass snake bracelet something fierce! Pun intended...

The Victorians tended toward superstition as well, as evidenced by the lack of smiles in photos, photos of survived parents with their dead children, etc. etc....as well as the jewelry made from hair--

I own a Victorian jet locket with two unsmiling women pictured inside. It's the most amazing piece of jewelry I own. It's almost morbid, but still...an elegance you will never see in modern jewelry in my opinion.

I like your style, Lauren. I have a feeling, you might like my closet too. ;)

These are beautiful!! Where are the other pics from (the ones not from St Kilda)?

Oh, oops, they're all from St Kilda. Just didn't notice them on the site. I want one of those snake-eating-its-tail rings. Another name for it is an Ouroboros, and it figures in one of my favorite novels. So now i kind of want that ring, badly.

As Indy likes to say: "I HATE SNAKES!" But I'd push down my fear of the reptiles if I had those snake rings. I'm not sure if I like how real they look though. :)

@minverrva: thanks for the link!

I am not partial to snakes - they look creepy but I really really love the fourth ring you posted with the inscription. How delicate!
