comfort zone be damned

Ok so, a few nights ago while trying to fall asleep I worked myself into a little panic attack about the amount of vintage in the world. I was utterly convinced that I had already found all that is good and my shop was forevermore going straight the dumps because the world of vintage had gone dry. This is likely the anxiety many vintage sellers feel from time to time. I also was feeling wigged out about how the late 1980s was very much back in style and while I like some of it, I am very selective about that some of it and am terrified the vintage world will become this sea of fluorescent airbrushed t-shirts and giant beefy heeled shoes. I thought, "I had better warm up to some things outside of my comfort zone if I want to stay current) (which is funny because one might think selling vintage releases you from caring about what is "current". Not the case).

So the next day I went out shopping for the shop and tried to use a different eye, which is how I found this dress. It was perfect because while it's WAY out of my comfort zone and is 1980s, I actually kind of liked it so buying it wasn't impossible (it's nearly impossible for me to buy/sell things I just don't like, their sellability notwithstanding). Anyway, the irony of all this is that this freaking crazy black leather noir, dominatrix dress is something I would never think I would like or wear; and yet....I'm keeping it. I am keeping it because it fits nowhere in my closet, but sort of perfectly on my body and there ARE those nights where you go out and you just want to look like some kind of sexy superhero who hangs out with Halle Berry. Am I right?

And also...some updates to the shop...

love the leather dress. i'm reading The Watchmen - reminds me of when the one character complains about having to wear outfits 'cut down to my navel' - you should definately keep it!

Golly! This is the funniest blog I have read of yours! I totally get the lack of vintage in the world and the 80's hesitation. (Aside from the dress from the 80's that look like they are from the 50's of course :)
I have been trying to justify the flapper tie for my boyfriend! I LOVE it!!!

You look stunning! Good on ya for stepping outside the proverbial box - it certainly worked in your favor. So go back to your earlier-vintage pieces the other 6 days of the week, and enjoy the attention you get from this piece! ;D

I vote YES on the dress. You look like a badass rocker! I am suddenly obsessed with these 80s/90s cut-out, body-hugging little numbers.... I mean literally, just since last week. The collective unconscious is so hard to resist! (Except when it comes to terrible mainstream radio hits). I guess it's the whole "it FITS so nice" thing that makes the style appealing!!!

The black leather dress reminds me of the one worn by a very hot brunette in the Pet Shop Boys' video for "Domino Dancing". I liked the video a lot, and the dress is great.
