he'll be the mirror

Bill Cunningham New York Trailer from Gavin McWait on Vimeo.

Street style "blogging" may be new, but shooting street style isn't new; Bill Cunningham, a 1940s Harvard dropout and later a photographer who contributed significantly to fashion journalism. I'd love to see this, of course!

looks so goooood! I like when he says, "I'm not interested in celebrities with their free dresses, I'm interested in CLOTHES." yes!

I found you on etsy back in March, love your blog...truly inspring! I'm surprised I haven't bumped into you @ an Ann Arbor thrift store. :)

fascinating....though I don't agree with the person who said street style wasn't invented until Bill got a camera LOL. Perhaps New Yorkers started to more self consciously fashion themselves in ways that would get them photographed by Bill, but arguably, once you become self conscious in that way, a little something of the authenticity of one's street style becomes "tainted"? Anywhoo, I've seen pictures from the 40s, 50s, and 60s taken by street photographers (my dad actually bought several street photos that were taken of him by a street photog), so Bill's work seems fascinating, but it certainly is not the first or last word on street style photography, especially when we're talking about people outside of the NY glitterati?

oh, my dad's photos of him were randomly taken during 1960, 1961, 1962...apparently there was a guy who made a living by taking street photos of people (without them aware of the fact) and then he'd come forward and say, "hey, do want to buy this street photo I took?") really neat historical records of what "real" people were wearing on the streets of various American and Canadian cities and towns!

Jill -
You are so right, street style photography is much older than Bill Cunningham, in fact I believe it is most credited to two men, The Seeberger Brothers, as early as the 1920s. You can read a book about them called 'Elegance', found here: http://amzn.to/gPf6jZ

I saw this documentary at the Film Forum and he totally inspired me. His lifestyle is fascinating - minimalist is an understatement. He lives one of the fullest, richest lives on almost nothing but the love of his work and his art.

I am so glad someone decided to do a documentary on him. I hope I'll be able to find it somewhere when I come back to the states soon.
